Choosing between a wooden and a steel hull in Indonesia is not primarily a cost decision — it is a decision about construction method, maintenance regime, survey exposure and where the vessel can be built and serviced. Get those four right and the cost comparison resolves itself; get them wrong and the less expensive hull becomes the more expensive vessel.
Two entirely different construction methods
Steel construction is drawing-driven. Plate is cut to a nesting plan, blocks are assembled and outfitted, structure is verified against approved scantlings, and the whole process is documented. Timber construction in South Sulawesi is shipwright-driven: the hull form lives with an experienced build team rather than in a CAD file, frames are shaped and fitted progressively, and the controlling knowledge is craft knowledge.
This has a direct commercial consequence. A steel vessel can be tendered to several yards against one specification and the returned prices compared. A timber vessel is contracted around scantlings, timber species and seasoning, a named build team, and defined inspection points — because the specification cannot fully describe how the hull will be produced. The row that owners most often overlook is the last one. A timber vessel built without as-built drawings will need them for insurance, for tonnage measurement, for every future refit and for eventual sale — and producing them from a finished, lined vessel costs far more than producing them during construction.
Maintenance regimes are not comparable
Steel demands coating and cathodic protection discipline. Where those lapse, corrosion progresses steadily and predictably, and the remedy — steel renewal — is well-understood, scoped from thickness measurement, and priced by area. It is expensive but it is knowable.
Timber demands ventilation, fastening condition, fresh-water management and vigilance against rot and marine borer. Deterioration is less uniform and harder to survey: a hull can appear sound and carry serious localised decay behind a fair surface. The remedy is plank and frame replacement by a shipwright, which is skilled, slow, and available in fewer places.
Both hulls can serve for decades. The difference is that steel punishes neglect predictably and timber punishes it unpredictably.
Where each hull can be built and serviced
Steel newbuild and heavy repair sit in Batam, Java and Kalimantan. Timber construction sits in South Sulawesi — Bulukumba regency and the coastal villages — with fit-out and refit commonly performed nearer the operating market in Bali, Lombok or Labuan Bajo, using slipways, travel lifts and air-bag hauls rather than graving docks. A steel vessel operating in eastern Indonesia may need to transit a considerable distance for major steel renewal; a timber vessel may need to transit back toward Sulawesi for significant shipwright work. Survey, class and insurance
Classification and statutory treatment differ between the two, and several international schemes contain specific provisions or exclusions relating to wooden vessels — the IMO identification scheme being one example, covered in our article on IMO numbers. Insurers likewise take their own position on hull material, construction method, age and survey history, and the terms available can differ materially. The practical rule: obtain an indicative insurance position before committing to a hull material, because discovering the underwriting view after launch removes all your options.
Which to choose
- Choose steel where the vessel must carry commercial certification for demanding trades, where heavy structural loading or long unsupported spans are involved, where predictable maintenance planning matters more than aesthetics, or where the vessel will operate far from shipwright skill.
- Choose timber where the vessel’s commercial proposition depends on traditional form and appearance, where the operating pattern keeps it within reach of shipwright capability, and where the owner accepts an ongoing, skilled maintenance commitment.
- Choose neither on price alone. The initial figures are rarely comparing equivalent vessels.
