BKI Class & Compliance: Surveys, Yards, Renewals

BKI (Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia) is the national classification society whose rules govern most Indonesian-flagged commercial tonnage: annual surveys every year, intermediate surveys mid-cycle, a special survey every five years, and two docking surveys per five-year period. Our desk aligns those cycles with yard slots, prepares vessels for docking surveys, and supports class renewal for commercial fleets.

Answer first: what BKI requires of your vessel and which yards satisfy it

If your vessel is BKI-classed, its maintenance calendar is written by the survey cycle, not by preference. Certificates stay valid only while surveys are passed on time, and insurers, charterers and port state control all read class status before they read anything else. The practical questions an owner needs answered are: when is each survey due, what will the surveyor require, which yard can host the survey properly, and what work should be packaged into the same docking to avoid paying for the dock twice. Those four questions are this page — and the desk’s service.

BKI publishes its rules and survey requirements publicly (rules for classification and surveys, available via BKI’s official publications); what follows summarises standing practice for planning purposes. Your vessel’s survey status report remains the authoritative document, and we always work from it.

BKI survey cycle map (annual, intermediate, special, docking)

Survey Timing Where held Planning note
Annual survey Every 12 months (±3-month window) Afloat, at berth or anchorage Keep certificates, records and safety equipment audit-ready
Intermediate survey Between 2nd and 3rd anniversary Afloat; may extend scope by age Older vessels face enhanced tank and thickness checks
Special survey (class renewal) Every 5 years Normally aligned with a docking Thickness gauging and steel renewal decisions land here
Docking survey Twice per 5-year cycle, max 36 months apart Dry dock / slipway One docking usually pairs with the special survey

The economics are in the pairing: a docking survey that also clears the special survey, coating renewal and steel work in one dock period costs materially less than the same items scattered across separate dockings. That pairing is a scheduling exercise — and it starts a year out, not a month out. Dock availability nationally is mapped in the National Yard Register.

Checking whether a yard is BKI-approved

Class-relevant work — steel renewal, welding on hull structure, machinery affecting class items — must be executed under conditions the attending surveyor accepts: qualified welders, approved procedures, traceable materials, and calibrated testing. Yards accustomed to BKI work maintain welder qualifications and current procedure approvals as standing practice; occasional yards do not, and the difference surfaces mid-survey as rejected work. Before committing a survey docking we verify with the yard and the local BKI office that the specific scope can be witnessed at that facility — a ten-minute check that prevents a multi-week problem.

Docking survey preparation: gaugings, checklists, surveyor liaison

A docking survey passed first time is prepared, not hoped for. Our preparation sequence: thickness gauging by an approved firm before or at docking, with the report structured the way surveyors read it; tanks and voids opened, cleaned and ventilated to schedule; sea valves, shafting, rudder and anchors staged for inspection in the order the surveyor will walk; and previous conditions of class closed out with evidence ready. We liaise with the attending surveyor on sequence and timing so the survey follows the work, and lay days are never burned waiting for attendance.

Class renewal support for commercial fleets

For fleets, class is a portfolio problem: multiple vessels, staggered cycles, and yard slots that must line up with trading commitments. The desk maintains a fleet survey calendar, books dockings against due windows across the register, packages survey scope with commercial repair to cut dock days, and supervises execution so renewal is granted without conditions where the steel allows it. Selection criteria for survey-capable yards are covered in shipyard selection & vetting.

Documents to keep survey-ready at all times

Surveys go fastest for vessels whose paperwork is already in survey order: the current class certificates and survey status report, previous docking and gauging reports, records of steel renewals with material certificates, coating specifications and DFT records from the last docking, and evidence closing any previous conditions of class. We build and maintain this file for fleet clients so every attendance — planned or unplanned — starts from documents, not from searching.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a shipyard in Indonesia is BKI approved?

Confirm two things: that the yard routinely hosts BKI surveys with current welder and procedure qualifications, and that the local BKI office will attend your specific scope at that facility. We run both checks directly with the yard and the class office before any survey docking is booked.

What are BKI class renewal survey requirements for seagoing ships?

Class renewal (special survey) every five years covers hull structure with thickness gauging, machinery and electrical systems, and closing of outstanding conditions of class — normally paired with a docking survey. Scope deepens with vessel age; the survey status report defines the exact list.

Apa saja persyaratan kapal naik dok menurut BKI?

Praktik standar kelas: dua kali survey pengedokan dalam setiap periode lima tahun, dengan jarak maksimum 36 bulan, salah satunya biasanya digabung dengan special survey. Rincian per kapal mengikuti survey status report BKI kapal tersebut; panduan berbahasa Indonesia tersedia di halaman docking kapal.

What does BKI require for a wooden charter vessel survey?

Classed timber vessels are surveyed against BKI’s rules for wooden ships: hull condition including fastenings and caulking, machinery and safety items, with docking or slipping for bottom inspection on the applicable cycle. Charter operators should plan haul-out capacity early — suitable slipways in the East book out in season.

Is BKI recognised internationally for flag administrations?

BKI is Indonesia’s national classification society and the reference for Indonesian-flagged tonnage, performing statutory work delegated by the Indonesian administration. For vessels trading internationally or held under foreign flags, recognition varies by flag administration; owners weighing flag options should confirm acceptance with the target registry — a step we handle within delivery, flag & export engagements.
